Skin Care Routines for Different Skin Types

August 17, 2024 Skincare Clinic

We all know that age will impact our skincare routine, but have you ever considered how your skin type influences your ideal skincare regime?

Understanding Skin Condition Vs. Skin Type

Skin type and skin condition are often used interchangeably when describing skin care concerns. They are, however, two different things.

Your skin type is largely determined by genetics. This includes things like pore size (sorry) and oil production. Unfortunately, you can’t fight genetics; the skin you’re born with will almost certainly remain the same throughout your life. You can, however, minimize trouble areas with the right skincare routine and treatments like those offered by a skin care clinic in Pitt Meadows (more on that later).

Now skin condition, other the other hand, is an evolving situation describing how your skin is in the present moment. Your skin condition might be dehydrated or hyperpigmented from excessive sun exposure or you might be suffering from acne breakouts or blackheads. These are all temporary situations that can be addressed with the right combination of skin care products and lifestyle adjustments. Other skin conditions, like fine lines, are also treatable, if not reversible.

The Right Routine for Each Skin Type

There are five characteristic skin types, and each has its own unique skin care needs.

The first four types of skin are easy to spot.  We classify them based on oil production and pore size. The last type, sensitive, is difficult to identify on appearance alone and is best left to a specialist at a skin care clinic.

Skin Type #1: Oily

Oily skin produces an excess of sebum which can leave the skin looking shiny and feeling greasy, especially throughout the T-zone which crosses the forehead, nose, and chin.  People with oily skin will often notice larger pores and are more prone to acne, blackheads, and whiteheads.

Routine: Cleanse and Nourish

Just because skin might have more oil, doesn’t mean hydrating and moisturizing is any less important. Managing oily skin comes down to choosing the right products. Pick a gentle, deep cleaning cleaner that can help remove buildup and minimize pores. Beta-hydroxy acid is often recommended by skin care clinics around Pitt Meadows as a great option for soaking up excess oil and controlling breakouts. When it comes to moisturizer don’t skip it! Instead, look for lightweight water-based products that absorb well.

Skin Type #2: Dry

Dry skin types produce less natural oil than other skin types which leaves the surface of the skin with almost no visible shine and nearly imperceptible pores. However, those with delicate dry skin are more prone to fine lines, flaking, and rough texture than other skin types.

Routine: Sooth and Hydrate

Protecting your skin’s natural moisture barrier is crucial when dealing with delicate, dry skin. Avoid harsh cleaners that will only further dry out your skin and instead choose a gentle formula that can cleanse without stripping. After cleansing, using the right moisturizer is essential. Experts at skin care clinics love products with ceramides for dry skin types.

Skin Type #3: Combination

Combination skin types either fall into the oily/normal or normal/dry categories. The most common presentation is someone having an oily T-zone and dryer areas around the cheeks. To add to the complexities of managing combination skin, many with this skin type will notice seasonal variations or changes due to hormones and stress. Pores tend to be on the larger side as well.

Routine: Purify and Calm

Combination skin often requires a combination of products. Choose a gentle cleanser that will work to remove excess oil while maintaining the skin’s moisture barrier. Salicylic acid helps to gently exfoliate without overdrying. Some people choose to add a toner to their routine to target oiler areas and a weekly exfoliant to remove dry skin. Meanwhile moisturizers with hydrochloric acid help to moisturize without greasiness that could exacerbate oiliness.

Skin Type #4: Normal

Normal skin types are balanced, not too oily, and not too dry. Pores, while still visible, are small and uniform throughout the face. Those with normal skin types are generally less prone to breakouts and blemishes however it is still essential that they maintain a healthy skin care routine to keep their skin looking its best.

Routine: Maintain and Protect

Even great skin needs care to maintain its healthy glow. Focus on gentle cleansers that will not over dry, a light, hydrating moisturizer, and don’t forget to protect skin with a good quality SPF.
